Does raising kids lead to an empty nest?

If we are kids now or not, i would think that we must have been kids at some point and we have been directly or indirectly been involved in raising a kid.

One thing I noticed about rasing kids is that we raise kids so that they can become more independant but then eventually at some point they will leave us perhaps because they are independant and what that means is that our nest will be empty.

Is that ironical or simply an example of the circle of life or perhaps both?
