It is not time yet to go to bed
Here I am posting a YAP (yet another post) about how i learnt from my son.
The other day I was asking my son to go to bed and my son replied,”It is not time yet to go to bed”. I was speechless as I did not understand how my son arrived at that statement. I tried to interrogate and question to determine what my son meant when he said,” It is not time yet to go to bed”
My son replied that the sun is still out there and there is light and we have to go to bed only when it is dark. Little did I realize that that the very words I had used a few moons earlier would come back at me.
I knew that my son could not read the time on an analog clock, yet. However, I did not realize that my son had been noticing patterns and would challenge me at the earliest moment when he would find that I may be having two definitions for the same event.
My son had understood that day is when there is light and night is when there is no light. We do activities when there is light and go to bed when there is little or no light. Although a clock or a watch could help us identify the time, we did not really need a clock or watch to tell the approximate time of the day or night.
My son was going back to the fundamentals.
I am sharing this story to reinforce how we get used to the complicated concepts in life and during this time, there are some basic fundamentals that we may overlook as we get used to the luxuries of life. The YALM is that there are alternative approaches to solving the same situation and the simplest of the solution may be to go look at the fundamentals.
