Does raising the minimum wage cause Unemployment

One question that has always boggled me is if the minimum wage and unemployment are related ? If there is a relation, is the relation directly proportional or is the relation inversely proportional.

In other words, if I were to lower the minimum wage, will the unemployment  decrease or increase?
