Is it better to offer a recommendation than a suggestion?
Every day, we solve a gazillion issues and over time we come up with best practices that indicates what works and what does not. When we share the information with someone, the information may appear to be a recommendation or a suggestion.
Here is my understanding between a recommendation and a suggestion.
A recommendation is when we offer multiple alternatives and we state that the alternative solution number 3 is the way to proceed. A suggestion on the other hand is when we offer a solution that is the way to proceed. The
At the back of our mind, we may have evaluated what the alternatives of a recommendation are and we may have offered the solution as a suggestion in place of a recommendation but we may want to be aware that our audience may feel that we may have not evaluated alternatives when we offer a suggestion in place of a recommendation.
I think that it is better to offer a recommendation in place of a suggestion as I strongly believe that is better to over-communicate than to under-communicate. When we are newer to our audience it is better to start with recommendations. As we establish our authority with our audience, then we can slowly start offering suggestions.
