Is your most appropriate answer “Well; It Depends” ?
We face a lot of situations in our daily life and we remember times when the questions we face in the situations are ambiguous or should I say generic?
The following questions come to mind.
Can the answers to generic questions be specific?
Do we have enough information to answer the question adequately?
Is it polite to answer a question with a question ?
What should our grand strategy be ?
What should our tactic be?
How should we approach the question?
What can be considered as an appropriate answer?
Do ambiguous questions have appropriate answers?
The appropriate answer in my humble opinion is “Well; It Depends !!!”
“It Depends” on several factors and I start qualifying my answer with reasons to justify the chosen answer. The phrase ‘It Depends’ may appear to be non-confrontational and can quickly help the user out of an ambiguous situation. However; care must be taken in the usage of the phrase “It Depends”. Excessive usage of the word can appear as a ‘cop out’ and degrade the credibility of the user leveraging the phrase.
So, where do we draw the line of differentiation?
Well, It Depends !!
