Is Zipf’s law applicable to my language ?
Right from KinderGarten, we learn to read and write. Over a period of time, we improve not only our vocabulary but also our reading, and writing skills. We continuously work towards refining our skills. However; seldom do we realize that we use the same words over and over again.
Studies indicate that we use Zipf’s law in words, phrases, and whole sentences of the language.
Here is an example of the commonly used words or phrases in our daily life. If we were to take the commonly used words, count the words, and create a histogram that is sorted by the decreasing order of rank, then the shape of the curve is called as the Zipfs curve and the law is called as Zipfs law.
Research indicates that the most common multiple set of words is : “How old are you”.
The answer to the question posted earlier is Yes; Zipfs law is applicable to languages. So the next time you write a short story or read one, think about Zipfs law.
