Smoke and Mirrors can be effective in the short-term

Do you want to win a project in the short-term? If the answer is yes, then the concept of ‘smoke and mirrors’ can help you.

There are times when reality cannot achieve a desired solution to a potential problem. However; if we can create a perception that is different from the reality, then the alternate perception becomes the new reality as an illusion is created in the minds of the stakeholders about the alternate perception and in the minds of the stakeholder their perception is their reality.

The term ‘smoke and mirrors’ can be used for fooling the stakeholders into thinking about the alternate perception in place of thinking about the reality. As a result, a person that looks like this can look like this.

Reality                 Alternate Perception

The smoke and mirrors can create an illusion that is not aligned with the reality. where is the bulls eye ?For Example; the sales team may promise features that the implementation team may not have even thought of, let alone have a clue about. However; applying the concept of the smoke and mirrors, can enable the sales team to win over a project that may not have been possible if the sales team consisted of straight shooters.

The impact of the deception created by smoke and mirrors can be minimized by asking more questions and clarifying the fundamental assumptions. In the long-term, the implementation team will have to develop what the sales team promised but in the short-term, the smoke and mirrors may emerge as the winner.
